The Story

Argonaut Community Enterprises was founded by two deaf people who both worked in employment services to ensure access for deaf jobseekers.

They noticed that despite having relevant qualifications and excellent skills deaf candidates were, for various reasons, still having problems securing work. Further research found similar issues with candidates with other disabilities. The problems were particularly apparent for people who are deaf, visually impaired or have a learning disability where the overriding issue is access to information and communication.

During a working visit to Australia they discovered a company called Cleanforce, who were securing mainstream contracts and appointing disabled people to deliver.  Based on this idea, the model for Argonaut Community Enterprises was developed and established in September 2010 as a not-for-profit Social Enterprise, enabling investment and support our local community.

Trading started mostly in domestic cleaning with some commercial delivery, but we didn’t stop there; our commercial customers were asking us if we provided other services, such as gardening, painting, office cleaning and general maintenance.  In order to meet this demand, we changed our business plan to incorporate gardening and grounds maintenance, internal buildings maintenance, laundry and ironing, and PAT testing and expanded into both the commercial and domestic markets.

We are proud to deliver a high-quality service, tailoring each contract to meet the specific needs of each customer.

To see deaf or disabled people in work which fulfils their aspirations and potential, delivering cleaning, office cleaning, gardening and grounds maintenance, painting, and other maintenance services to commercial, domestic and third sector customers.

Meet the Team

Both the management and staff team at Argonaut Community Enterprises are predominantly deaf. Our staff work closely with customers to ensure satisfactory outcomes.

Deaf and disabled people are represented on our Board of Directors. We have an adviser from the construction industry who supports us with infrastructure and policy development. We would be delighted to add to the Board, and would welcome those from the finance, personnel and marketing sectors.

The type of work we deliver can sometimes see high levels of staff changes, but at Argonaut Community Enterprises we have a very low staff turnover.  This results in our customers receiving continuity of staff carrying out their requested jobs. We also ensure cover for holidays and sickness and all staff providing cover will do so to the same high standards, meeting each customer’s specific needs.
